Land marks: Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut (The Temple of Deir El Bahari)
The temple (see figure 9.1) is, due to its design and decorations, one of the most characteristic temples in Egypt(Ask-Aladdin, 2011). Instead of being built of sandstone like the majority of funerary temples built in this period (the New Kingdom) it was made of limestone.

It is thought that the genius architect, Senimut who designed this temple was in fact inspired by the layout of a neighboring temple of the king Neb-Hept-Re of the 12th dynasty. The temple was made for the great queen Hatsheput in the 18th dynasty as she required a funerary temple. The temple also served as a sanctuary for the god, Amon Re.
